LIHU’E – David Chung of the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center said the April drive at the Kaua’i Resource Center was a little slower than usual.
“It’s difficult when you overbook containers,” Chung said. “This month, we have only ordered two containers, the last of which was filled this morning. We’re starting on the overflow now.
At noon, nearly four hours after opening, Chung noted that more than 120 cars were being processed.
Shantelle Rego of the county’s solid waste department office estimated Friday’s collection was equivalent to about two or three containers shipped. Solid Waste’s goal is to have no overflow, whatever is collected is sent.
“It’s the May Day weekend,” Chung said. “I didn’t think there would be so many people bringing things.”
The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center’s next collection will be May 20 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kaua’i Resource Center.
During this time, residents, businesses and other organizations can bring in unwanted or unneeded items for reuse, including clothing, small furniture, children’s toys, books and shoes. Clothing and textiles do not need to be in good condition. Torn or stained clothing is acceptable.
However, people are asked not to bring electronic waste, chemicals, household appliances or broken items.
Due to health and safety issues with heavy equipment in the area and to reduce the risk of injury to customers unloading heavy objects, The Salvation Army asks that the public remain in their vehicles when going found at the Kaua’i Resource Center.
People are reminded to check with local thrift stores to see if they are able to accept donations before bringing items to the Kaua’i Resource Center.
The ARC offers pick-up services to thrift stores and businesses. Please call 808 241 4336 for new service. Residents requiring door-to-door pickup services can contact Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore at 808-335-6105, or RP’s Random Closet at 808-346-0020.
For more information on general recycling or reuse, call 808 241-4841 or visit kauai.gov/recycling or kauai.gov/reuse.
