ARC monthly collection covers more than 3 containers of material
LIHU’E – As of lunchtime Friday, more than three shipping containers of equipment had been processed by the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center team at the Kaua’i Resource Center in next to Lihu’e Waste Transfer Station and Reynold’s HI5 Recycling Center.
“That’s a lot of material that’s not going to landfill,” said Shantelle Rego, project manager at Kaua’i’s Solid Waste Division. “Two of the containers have already left. This one had just finished being packed.
A steady stream of cars with items for the ARC Donation Event drove through the Kaua’i Resource Center, only stopping for the ARC team to unload materials.
“We also had more than seven truckloads – the box trucks – that we worked on on Thursday,” said David Chung of the ARC team. “Thursday we were at Salvation Army Hanapepe Corps, Kaua’i Habitat for Humanity, Hanapepe United Church of Christ before moving to Kilauea, Hanamaulu and Salvation Army Lihu’e Corps.”
Many of the items picked up by the ARC team included surplus items for the groups’ thrift store operations.
The county, in announcing the upcoming monthly giving event, outlined some of the guidelines to make it easier for motorists to visit the Kaua’i Resource Center, including encouraging the public to check with local thrift stores to see if they can accept contributions before bringing the items to the Kaua’i Resource Center.
Rego said the next monthly Salvation Army ARC donation event will be March 25 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kaua’i Resource Center.
Residents, businesses and other organizations can bring in unwanted or unnecessary items for reuse. This includes clothing, small furniture, children’s toys, books and shoes.
Contributors are reminded to check items before bringing them in bags or boxes. Once an item is donated, it cannot be returned.
ARC also offers pick-up services to thrift stores and businesses. Please call 808-241-4336 to schedule new service.
