Mark Zuckerberg’s contact details included in Facebook leak
Mark Zuckerberg’s contact details have been included in the leaked records of more than 500 million Facebook users, it has been revealed …
The leaked data was reported over the weekend by a security company.
The phone numbers and personal data of more than 533 million Facebook users were posted online for free by a user in a low-level hacking forum, according to Business Insider. At least 100 countries are included in the leak, with data from 32 million users in the US and 11 million users in the UK.
This violation includes phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, dates of birth, biographies, and in some cases, email addresses.
We later learned that the breach did indeed occur in 2019 and that you can check if your contact details were included.
- Head toward haveibeenpwned.com on your phone or desktop.
- Enter your email id.
- If your email has been compromised, you will receive a warning to change the password and enable two-factor authentication. You can also scroll down to see any violations that may have included your credentials linked to the email address you entered.
Facebook has now revealed that the privacy breach occurred due to a bug in a tool it offered to import contacts.
We believe that the data in question was pulled from the Facebook profiles of people by malicious actors using our contact importer before September 2019. This feature was designed to help people easily find their friends to connect with on our services by using their contact lists.
When we learned how malicious actors were using this feature in 2019, we made changes to the Contact Importer. In this case, we have updated it to prevent malicious actors from using software to imitate our app and download a large number of phone numbers to see which ones match Facebook users. With the previous functionality, they could query a set of user profiles and get a limited set of information about the users included in their public profiles. The information did not include financial information, health information or passwords.
Wired reports that the victims of the stolen data included prominent figures, including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The information of over 500 million Facebook users in over 106 countries contains Facebook IDs, phone numbers, and other information about early Facebook users like Mark Zuckerburg and US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, as well as the European Union’s Data Protection Commissioner, Didier Reynders. Other victims include 61 people who list the “Federal Trade Commission” and 651 people who list “Attorney General” in their contact details on Facebook.
