TCOG will offer a third household hazardous waste collection event this year

Sherman, Texas (November 23, 2021) – Officials from Texoma Council of Governments announced a household hazardous waste (DDD) collection event by appointment only for Saturday, December 11, 2021 which will take place at the TCOG parking lot in Sherman. Collection will start at 8:00 a.m. and end at 12:00 p.m.

Despite the lack of DMD collection facilities throughout the year in this region, the TCOG received grants from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), with SEP penalties coming from enforcement action from TCEQ and a contribution from the Town of Sherman, each enabling the organization to offer regular fundraising events throughout the Texoma area.

?? Without a local recycling center that accepts household hazardous waste, Texoma can benefit greatly from this event, ?? said Chris Carr, TCOG Regional Services Specialist.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes DDDs as leftover household products that can ignite, react or explode under certain circumstances, or are corrosive or toxic. Products such as paints, cleaners, oils, batteries, and pesticides can contain hazardous ingredients and require special care when throwing them away. Improper disposal of this waste can pollute the environment and threaten human health.

The DMD collection event has been a busy and in demand event, serving as a way to protect our region from the adverse effects of hazardous waste dumping, save cities and counties the high cost of waste disposal fees. DMD and reduce the cost of crews coming to pick up and dispose of waste.

TCOG has offered two more HHW fundraising events this year, in Cooke and Fannin counties. Grayson County’s last collection event was in October 2020, in which more than 120 households participated. ?? Many residents have already benefited from these events, ?? Carr explained. ?? Last year we were able to divert over 35,000 pounds. DMD from landfills. This included 15,000 pounds. of latex paint and nearly 13,000 lbs. of electronic waste. ??

Acceptable items collected at the event include household quantities of hazardous waste (household chemicals, batteries, pesticides, insecticides, etc.) and electronic items (computers, telephones, printers, kitchen appliances, etc.). A complete list of acceptable and restricted items is available at TCOG website and can also be found on the HHW registration form.

Any Texoma resident can attend the event at no cost, although the event is by appointment only. We ask all participants to pre-register and arrive no earlier than 10 minutes before your appointment in order to reduce waiting times. To make an appointment, Click here.
