The Macallan M Collection unveils the 2022 edition of whiskeys

To make their spirits unique, whiskey makers usually follow a philosophy or guide. In the case of The Macallan, this philosophy is known as The Six Pillars.

The acclaimed single malts from the Speyside Distillery are all distinguished by natural color, mastery, curious little stills, estate, exceptional oak barrels and sherry seasoning.

The Macallanwhich has in the past dedicated limited editions to each pillar to educate and celebrate them, has just unveiled the 2022 editions. The M, M Black and all-new M Copper have been created in honor of the pillars of The Macallan which are respectively the natural color, the mastery and the curious little stills.

The Macallan M is a champion for the natural amber hue of its whiskies. Although Scotch-making laws allow the addition of caramel coloring to whiskey for consistency, the distillery has defiantly chosen to let its spirits show their original intensities. These colors come from the casks in which the spirits are aged and are therefore a tribute to the time the liquids have spent in contact with the wood.

With The Macallan M, the ingredients are 100% natural and aged in sherry-seasoned oak barrels, giving it its rich amber hue. It is carefully protected in Lalique crystal decanters. The nose opens with dark cherries, demerara sugar, oak and leather, with notes of chocolate and vanilla developing over time. In a burst of complexity that can only be expected from the best whiskeys in the world, its full-bodied character gives it notes of chocolate, dried fruits and spices.

The Macallan M Black owes its name to the black barrels which give the spirit its peaty character. The brand doesn’t typically produce peated whiskeys, but they have indeed experimented with this bold flavor. In fact, the distillery has a small, dedicated team of five, led by Master Whiskey Maker Kirsteen Campbell and Master Woodman Stuart Macpherson, who are constantly pushing the boundaries of whiskey creation.

Aromas of apple, pear and citrus combine with a subtle smoke that complements a palate of candied oranges, charred peaches, honeyed figs and dark chocolate. Along with the peat, there’s spicy ginger in a long, smoky finish backed by raisins. True to its name, The Macallan M Black is presented in a black Lalique crystal decanter.

Finally, the M Copper, the new expression of The Macallan, pays homage to the Curiously Small Stills of the distillery. The Macallan has always maintained top notch quality by using smaller stills instead of larger, more powerful ones. Due to their unique shape and size, the stills concentrate the new-make spirit, which gives The Macallan’s whiskey its rich and robust character.

The golden spirit leads with a nose of banana, pear and white peach flecked with biscuit, marshmallow, vanilla and a hint of lemon. It’s buttery and viscous on the palate, framed by malt, spicy oak and more banana. A long woody finish complements the fruitiness and sweet, malty taste of M Copper. This intense whiskey also dazzles in a copper-coloured Lalique decanter.

The Macallan’s creativity goes beyond his mind. Collaborations with designers and artisans extend to bottles and packaging. For the M 2022 collection, the distillery teamed up again with 134-year-old French crystal maker Lalique and tapped creative director Fabien Baron, founder of creative consultancy Baron & Baron, to create the elegant decanters.

“It is an honor to work with The Macallan – our longtime partner for 16 years – to bring this exquisite collection to life and showcase our shared sense of mastery, craftsmanship and heritage,” said Silvio Denz, Chairman and CEO of Lalique. “The decanters are totally unique in the world of decanters, very difficult to produce due to their shape, and the crystal masters at Lalique relished applying their most intricate skills to bring Fabien Baron’s creative vision to life. .”

The M collection and the six pillars of The Macallan are further illustrated by a series of striking images by acclaimed luxury fashion photographer Nick Knight, whose abstract and expressionistic style complements the visual history of whiskeys. Symbolizing the distillery’s connection to the River Spey, which runs through the estate, each carafe is encased in blocks of ice.

Connoisseurs will have the opportunity to explore the Macallan M collection in-depth at an Ion Orchard Atrium pop-up event from August 17-26, 2022. The collection is available exclusively on The Macallan store at Raffles Singapore.
